I am a NERD! I love amateur radio (AKA Ham Radio). My wife describes me as a duck....I can swim, fly and waddle all...adequately?? I have studied radiocommunications, Fine Art, Education and recently did 18 months of an Engineering degree (mechatronics). So the channel is eclectic content (see below and 73 de VK2AOE).
Ham Radio!!!!! HSC Engineering Studies (see the big play list), Ukulele, Kayaking, Kayak camping and ART, Print on Demand ....basically my life....so nothing too serious!!!! Hope you enjoy!??

Good to see you getting the 520 going. My personal view on what owners of equipment should do as far as modifications is it's your equipment so do as you desire. I would love to see art on the rig.

You could have bought a 7300 for what you’ve laid out in cash and time…..but you’d never look as cool when you’re on the air….especially if you put some blue glow LED strips underneath the rig….just kidding. Do not do that. If you do I will unsubscribe….

Thank you....I normally calibrate whenever I change the range of "stimulus". I must of not done it in this case. Thanks for that tid bit of useful information that I didn't know! Just tried it and 100% correct. Nice to know as it will remind me to do it! 73 and TU OM most useful.

Lots of things amazed me while building the QCX-mini 20M, not least the sturdiness and quality of the finished transceiver in it's QRP-labs case. It simply feels and performs like a quality piece of kit and it's staggering that he can produce these for such a reasonable price. John EI5JS.
Yes! It snapped together in such a satisfying way. Totally agree the solid weight in the palm of your hand and performance makes it amazing value. This is why I will be shopping again tonight before the “good thing” comes to an end! 😜 73 and thanks for popping by. De VK2AOE
Time for me to build its evil twin. The QCX that John West Rejects
SEBAGEY Very Good!!!
You would do somewhat better if you stood up the filter toroids. They induce currents into the copper-clad bd material, lowering their efficiency.
I did stand them up in the end. My latest build is even more of a disaster... but will operate on it soon. It still has got me to Victoria though but chirpy :) The QRP LABS QCX mini is a ripper! 73 de VK2AOE ruclips.net/video/M7MuVNmIXb8/видео.htmlsi=YdPLJzxRIQrjBR_W
Which might mean that the filament supply or some other part of that driver tube is loading a supply causing the issue? My TS520 I changed all large electrolytic caps (not every cap). I’ll look at a cct diagram and have a think about it. 73 OM
Hello Would you be so kind as to give me some advice? I have a Kenwood TS 530s with the following symptoms: In RX: heater=off, Reception is correct. heater=on, Reception is lost. In TX: Selector in SSB: IP readings: reading 0 Even negative, ALC readings: reading 0 Even negative, All components of the final step plate are in good condition. Could it be a valve12BY7a problem? or the electronics of its periphery? Thank you.
I am by no means an expert. Obviously be very careful as the voltages are deadly!! Only proceed if safe and you know what’s going on. Have you tried with driver tube removed and heater switch on…. To see if that kills receive? It is an interesting fault? Let me know what caused it, when the solution is found? I will keep my ear to the ground and if I hear anything helpful will pass it on 73 de VK2AOE
@@TheArtofEngineering First of all, I can't be more grateful for your quick response. This equipment has just arrived in my hands because I really like valve equipment. They seem like engineering jewels to me. I have carried out the test that you propose, If I remove the Driver valve, 12BYA and right after I activate the heater. The reception is perfect, it is not lost. Thanks again
Apparently it could seem like a valve problem. I don't rule it out. What happens is that I have tried a second valve and the problem persists. Unfortunately I don't have a valve tester to know what condition these two valves are in.

The AT-180 from the TS-180 line is the same tuner. Both of these tuners beat any MFJ tuner of the same wattage.
100 % agree! Been a great unit. 73 and thanks for dropping by de VK2AOE
4:12 is this the final circuit?
Yes …. But I removed the 50 ohm resistor to earth at input and the pot. So mine was a fixed bandwidth (narrowish but I didn’t measure it?). So 4:12 is the cct as provided by the original creator. I found the bit I removed were causing too much attenuation for my preamp. 73 de VK2AOE.
@@TheArtofEngineering thanks
What is a CW filter? A bandpass filter?
It narrows the audio frequency passband… so it is a poor man’s substitute for narrow IF type filters. 73 and tnx fer the comment.

What I find puzzling about Newton’s 3rd law and lift generation is the ‘…equal and opposite reaction’, with that portion of the law in my mind suggesting the force is canceled out. ie Airfoil against relative wind producing for example 5kg of downward force, and the law suggesting a 5kg upward force…so we’re back at zero. Where’s the lift?
Nice video George. Luckily i got my ro ticket in 1970 when there was a shortage of r/o’s . Spent 18 months with Marconi then went freelance for next 12 years. Was a great career and worked solely on ships. Like you i had an interest in flying so got my pilots license in ireland. I then moved to USA where i got a commercial helicopters license with plans to work on oil rigs. However marriage put a damper on that so i guess it was not meant to-be. I did get my ham radio licence but when kids came along there was no time for that. I am back on air now and i teach a cw course on Zoom with Long Island CW club. Still love cw and i am encouraged by number of people who want to learn it despite the fact its no longer a requirement.
Thanks for the comment. Twas a great life and best job at sea. CW is in a real Renaissance here in Oz. The QRS net is growing weekly and lots of interest in code! 73 de VK2AOE
Haha that intro is awesome!!
My friend ….Mr AI wrote it for me ! 😜😝😝
Glad to see someone else blows things up. I am working with laser diodes on another project talk about static sensitive, I thought mosfets were bad.
Yes …. I send more smoke signals than RF! 😝 The static sensitive stuff has gotten better over the years. I worked for a data com company and the chief engineer used to belt me when I didn’t plug in my anti static lead… the chips were $$$$$ back then.
George - I very strongly suggest having independently variable tx & rx frequencies with two variable capacitors, a switch or relay and a spot button. Especially with a direct conversion receiver that allows you to listen above or below the tx frequency, thus dodging interference picked up in the audio image. Eg ruclips.net/video/HguCFNd4fHQ/видео.html
Thanks Peter. I saw your video for the “toy” 40m rig. Makes a huge amount of sense to dodge that possible nearby opposite “image” freq for a DC rig. … especially if the band is busy. I have a matched variable… might give it a crack! Thanks and 73 OM
You’re like a post apocalyptic Charlie Morris BTW I grabbed a bunch of 6V variac diodes. Want some ??
You tease me with these tidbits! Yes please . I am like Charlies mentally deranged progeny....baaaaaaaaa
@@TheArtofEngineering I have all these parts and no time to do anything with them. My X Phase QRM box is still in bits whilst I try to get it to react to the PTT control at the back of the FT747GX that goes from 12V 0v when you key the mic. 0.6V when you press the MOX and 1.2V when you key up on CW. The P channel MOSFETs are still in their bag next to the little SMD variac diodes. No through hole ones I’m afraid. How’s the DTs ?? Beer steadies the hands
It’s been there as long as I have been back on the air. Turns up in the evenings. There’s a few around 7039-7040KHz When I started I would tune around and get excited that there was some slow Morse that i could try to copy or snag a QSO with. Sadly it was just one letter. There are a number of beacons across the HF spectrum that are for Russian military on their regular voice and CW frequencies. Some broadcast on the hour / half hour. Others are continuous. Oh the Oddities of HF Radio
I tried to send my CALLSIGN and QRZ? After each K …. But no reply!!!! 🥹
GAAAAAAHHHHH! ANOTHER video/article saying DDS vfo or signal generator that ISNT DDS!!!! as someone who is searching for DDS specifically, I'm getting pretty fed up with this internet wide mistake of calling PLL multisynth based signal sources like the si5351, DDS. Its even more galling when you actually have part of your presentation covering the harmonics produced from this circuit and not make the connection that it is the direct consequence of it NOT being DDS! Thats why you would use DDS, DDS is harmonic free pure sine waves. As you stated in this video a few times, the si5351 is a clock generator and produces square waves, now this CAN be used fine in most applications with simple filtering of harmonics and many radio projects have successfully employed them. Like I say, its not just here, its seems internet wide that every Arduino, raspberrypi micro controller signal gen/vfo gets labelled DDS, and its incorrect, so sorry if it seems like I'm picking on you. 73 de G0AFV
Yes …. Correct. But I’m an AMATEUR radio operator not an RF engineer. So it is Digital Synthesis (as the RF is produced by digital means) but NOT DIRECT Digital Synthesis. It is my understanding that DDS only allows a change of frequency if the reference clock is changed …. So this might be why amateur projects don’t use it (too complex?). Why would you use a true DDS for a simple CW transceiver if a PLL derived signal suffices? By the way no offence taken, this type of comment is how we all learn about this hobby we ALL love together: if you do find a DDS (or design one) drop me a line. 73 de VK2AOE
@@TheArtofEngineering "..but I'm an AMATEUR radio operator not an RF engineer.." running a RUclips channel labelled "The Art of Engineering" ? whatever, its only RUclips. Your description of DDS is totally wrong, Google will sort you out there. There are a number of REAL DDS VFO and sig gens kits and projects already out there, created by amateurs, most seem to use the AD9850 chip, and no they are not really anymore complicated than this circuit. 73 de G0AFV
@@bazzaar1869 I have a Radiocommunications Engineering Certificate… Fine Art Degree and I’m part way through (18 months) of a Mechatronics Degree. Hence the channel title. As for RUclips “sorting me out” …. I do this for enjoyment…. But the channel does grow up to 100 subs per month, so some hams are enjoying the content. 73 OM.
where does the bernoulli principle come into flow turning in particular? or is it separate and only combined when putting the theories together?
It is probably best to describe lift using one or the other. I think for the NSW HSC either is OK. I suspect both have a part to play. Newton's flow turning explanation and Bernoulli explanation. see link below 😜 www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/VirtualAero/BottleRocket/airplane/wrong1.html#:~:text=Therefore%2C%20the%20molecules%20going%20over,the%20airfoil%20produces%20the%20lift.

Did you rewind the primary of the M wave trans or did you put 2 in series ? They usually have halve the needed turns otherwise they run hot.
Yes.....2 primary windings in series. Video 2 in the series shows the current clamp primary current value for one transformer (1.7 amps) and then 2 transformers in series less than 300mA. The supply is now my main shack supply and is still going strong! 73 thanks for the comment de VK2AOE.

I find that liquid electrical tape works very well for sealing up these boxes as well as any connections, or even nicks or cuts in a cable or wire. I also like to wrap my PL259 connectors with self sealing silicone tape, and that has worked quite well for me too. Kind of a pain building the choke inside a box while not using any extra connectors, but its the way I do mine too because it does seem the best way to ensure it will stay water tight and not be holding a quart of old rain water when I next take it down and open it up. My antenna feeds into a 5:1 unun in a similar box made by Chameleon, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they sealed it all up tight with liquid electrical tape sealant the same way I do mine. Makes me feel a little more confident that I won't have any leaks to worry about. Thanks for the video. I usually have a pretty good idea what I want to do, but it makes it easier to see someone else do it and know that it works.
Yes I love RUclips for this very reason. We get to see how stuff happens! 73 and thanks for the comment.
